I think the answer to the question is up to the family and what they are willing to give up for the price of being home with the children. A report on CNN states that over time a family gives us about 1 million dollars to stay home with the young family. They consider all the company benefits and retirement funds etc. I as a mother feel my children are priceless. There are many ways to make money from home. We just need to be creative.

  1. I think you bring up an excellent alternative for many mothers out there. Instead of completely giving up their work life to stay home and raise children they can both work and raise their children from the comforts of their own home. All it takes is a bit of creativity and a stay at home mother could be making money to contribute to the family income as well as raising their children. It is important to remember that staying home to take care of the children doesn't necessarily mean losing the career portion of a mother's life.

  2. It is an excellent alternative.

Another option that is rising in popularity is job sharing. I have been trying to find my article on it (I think it was in Parents Magazine-but I'm not sure). From what I understand about it, it involves two people sharing one full-time job. The purpose to doing this rather than just taking on a part time job is that most full-time jobs pay more whether it's hourly or salary. So by sharing the jobs, some moms can work out flexible work hours with their job sharing partner and make more money than at a typical part-time job. It's win-win with the right parter- that is, someone with the opposite schedule.

  3. The U.S Department of Labor defines job sharing as "two (or more) workers share[ing] the duties of one full-time job, each working part time, or two or more workers who have unrelated part-time assignments share[ing] the same budget line" If the kinks of such arrangements do not get in the way of quality and productivity, job sharing can be an appealing solution for employees seeking part-time work as well as employers.

  4. I have never heard of job sharing before. That is an interesting concept. I think I would be willing to consider that as an option especially if I could contribute more money to my family than if I had a part time job. That would be an excellent option more many stay at home mothers. Starting your own business is hard work not to mention expensive. Depending on the business it would be like working full time. With job sharing they have the option of earning good money and not having to be responsible for their own business. It will be interesting to see if job sharing really takes off.
